Traffic Safety Unit - Sergeant Michael Voitcu

                               Patrolman Scott McCafferty

On any given day, approximately 250 thousand vehicles travel through Florham Park Borough with the average of 1 collision per day, or between 300 to 350 accidents per year, including the average of 1 fatal accident per year. The Traffic Safety Unit's main focus is on bringing the number of motor vehicle accidents down through education, enforcement and engineering. The educational component consists of training our Police Officers in traffic law updates, radar operations and problem areas. It also includes educating the community with quarterly articles on traffic, lectures to schools, civic groups, college students and senior citizens.

The enforcement mechanism includes working with special tactical traffic enforcement officers, the New Jersey State Police, Morris County Sheriffs Department, Florham Park Borough Officers and New Jersey Division of Motor Vehicles. This includes:

  • Radar enforcement
  • Car and commercial vehicles inspections
  • Traffic counts and studies high impact areas
  • Engineer of road design
  • Signs and traffic control devices
  • Compile accident data (prepare and forward to NJDMV)

Education
The traffic safety unit schedules the deployment of the radar trailer. This trailer is deployed at the request of Borough residents. The trailer is equipped with a radar unit and a large display window that allows the motorist to see their speed.

Motor Vehicle Inspection Team

The Florham park police Department select areas in the borough to set up a Tack-Pac team to inspect. Violators will receive a summons or the Vehicle may be towed. The owner is also provided with a list of what is wrong with the vehicle.
