Detective Division
The primary
responsibility of the detective bureau is to investigate criminal
activities ranging from disorderly persons offenses to first degree
crimes such as murder. During the course of these investigations a
warrant or summons complaint will be issued if probable cause is
established. Based upon the severity of the crime the case will be
heard either at the municipal court level or at superior court.
Typically cases involving first to fourth degree crimes are heard at
the superior court level. Most investigations usually begin by
reports being filed by the patrol division who in turn shares this
information with the detective bureau for further investigation and
follow-up. The gathering of this information is investigated,
recorded and maintained for intelligence purposes. The benefit of
recording and tracking criminal activities allows the detective
division to determine if patterns or particular behaviors are being
used during the course of criminal activities. This information is
also shared with other law enforcement agencies and is entered
through NCIC. The purpose for communicating this information to
county, local, state and federal agencies provides the detective
bureau with a proactive approach to assist with the possible
identity and apprehension of the defendants.
The detective
division handles multiple tasks in addition to investigations which
include retrieval of property and evidence, execution of search
warrants, background investigations, forensic analysis, ABC
licensing infractions, Meagan’s law, firearms applications and the
taking of photographs.
